Returning to In-Person Lessons?

Many of us have been contemplating the return to in-person private lessons, and perhaps some of us have already done so. It is a somewhat elusive decision right now, as pandemic circumstances are
always changing.

Some teachers and parents may not yet feel comfortable with in-person lessons. Keeping a disinfected and well-circulated environment, tolerating extended mask-wearing, and staying socially distant are all factors to consider when planning for reopening.

While willing to continue lessons virtually, I plan to at least offer in-person lessons to my students starting in September. I feel that giving parents a choice is important for my business to remain intact. In so offering, I will be sharing my safety procedures, such as disinfecting doorknobs and wiping down the keys with hydrogen peroxide between lessons, using hand sanitizer before and after lessons, and requiring the use of a mask. Additionally, I am pleased to say that I had an Air Scrubber installed on my HVAC system this week. It is a whole-house UV bulb that kills viruses, bacteria, allergens and mold, mainly in the air but also on surfaces.

Please comment to share YOUR plans for Fall lessons, as there are certainly things to consider not yet mentioned. Questions to our members would also be great!

Thanks for the blog post on this very important topic, Miriam. I'm going to look in to the HVAC product and truly appreciate your sharing that information with all of us!

Miriam, I am wondering which brand of Air Scrubber you purchased. Also, from whom and did an HVAC company install it?
Thanks so much!
Janet

Janet and Carol, I purchased it from Mattioni (an HVAC company). The brand they used is called Aerus. Here is the website for Aerus which explains what it does:

I'm looking to keep most of my students online this Fall. I am offering a biweekly approach to students that wish to have some "face to face" lessons, where the schedule will be staggered and every other student will be online, then the next week the schedule switches to allow for surfaces to sanitize etc. Any students that wish to be face to face will have their temperature checked at the door and everyone will be required to wear masks and wash hands before entering the music room (The bathroom is located right inside the door). All of this is only if we remain in "green" however. Everyone knows that if we enter yellow again, everything is definitely online! Right now I'm working on activities for my voice students as all singing will be done on their weeks "online" since the preliminary results from the Colorado study don't seem to look promising for singers. I'm thinking we will delve into vocal anatomy, music theory, rhythm and text study during face to face weeks. That way we can still move forward and work on music--while minimizing risk!

Since I have most of the sound issues worked out on Zoom, I plan to keep up with the remote lessons as long as necessary. I have enough space in which to teach in person lessons with masks and be fairly safe so I will offer them on occasion. I do not feel comfortable having the students come one after another or as a family. Until the virus mutates into something less noxious or there is a vaccine, this is how I will continue teaching. We are lucky because we live in an area where many of our parents can work remotely and the families have strong broadband service along with a variety of devices with which to connect for lessons. I feel fortunate that I have been able to continue teaching most of my students.

I am doing exactly what you are doing Elaine. I am impressed with how well online teaching is working. We are moving forward and learning but at a slower pace. That’s not all bad. I feel uneasy about the virus and plan to wait until things are under better control.
